100 things

Next week is a special week for my second grader. She is so excited. I'm not. For Valentine's day, she is expected to bring a Valentine's day card for each kid in her class. And, for the 100th day of school, her assignment is to bring a collection of 100 "things". That's about 6,000 things for the second grade alone.

So, I'm thinking 100 lady bugs (we won't miss them); she's thinking 100 pencils. My son's thinking 100 Yugioh cards and his class isn't even participating. What I should have her do is bring 100 pieces of homework paper from the bags I've collected so far this year. I'm still not sure what I'll do with the paper I accumulate. According to my friend on the Board, if I complain, I better be ready to do something about it!

My assignment was to bring paper products to the party next week - I hope they like recycled. I think I'll bring a camera, too and post my findings here...

Geez. I'm with you. That assignment could easily be titled: How to Be a Good Consumerist! For many people it would almost certainly necessitate a trip to the store.

Lady bugs are a cute idea. But, even if you go with her idea of 100 pencils, at least they're usable after the show-and-tell.

However, choosing pencils makes me wonder what the best environmental choice of pencils are for elementary school children?? Do you buy pencils that have to be sharpened or pencils that can be refilled?

Can homework paper be shreaded and used as mulch? Or, can it be used like wood shavings for guinea pigs? -- not that those are ways to get rid of huge quantities.
