Last year, we switched energy companies. Our old company uses high-polluting, non-renewable resources to generate electricity. Our new, "green energy" electricity provider -
Green Mountain Energy - uses a mix of 50% hydro (falling water), 40% landfill gas (gross) and 10%wind (cool). One five minute call was all it took.
According to
Wikipedia:
Green energy is a term used by some environmentalists to describe what they deem to be environmentally friendly sources of power. In particular green energy must be renewable and non-polluting. Green energy is generally considered to include:
Geothermal power
Wind power
Small-scale hydropower
Solar power
Biomass power
Tidal power
Wave power
According to
PowerScorecard.org, a web site that rates the environmental impact of electricity providers across the US, Green Mountain Energy is not the greenest electricity company available in our area. The winner is Windbuilders, a
NativeEnergy product. Windbuilders generates 100% of its energy from you guessed it - wind. The result is almost no environmental impact.
We should all make the call and switch to green energy. It does cost a little more, though. But, for less than a penny more per kWh, you can help wean us off non-renewable energy sources like gas, oil, coal and nuclear. Go to
PowerScorecard.org, select your state, select the best (or cheapest) green energy company, then make the call. If you have a few more minutes, email your friends and family and ask them to make the switch. Tell them that this is one of the easiest and most impactful environmental decisions they make.

If only everyone thought like you, the planet that we borrow from our kids would be left in much better shape.
