Fix for Excel 2003's "Select All" weirdness

In my November 10 post, I complained that Ctrl + A in Excel 2003 no longer selects all cells in the worksheet, it only selects the current region, the way Ctrl + Shift + * (asterisk) always did.

Although I suggested pressing Ctrl + Alt + Spacebar instead, here's the real story: to select all cells, just press Ctrl + A twice! The first time, you'll select the current region; the second time, you'll select all cells, just as in previous versions.

Just like laws and sausages, this is how tip books get made.

Format by numbers in Word

Here are some great formatting shortcuts I often use in Word (they work in any version):
  • Insert (or remove) 12 points of space before a
    paragraph: Ctrl + 0 (zero)
  • Give a paragraph single-spacing (Word's default): Ctrl + 1
  • Give a paragraph double-spacing: Ctrl + 2
  • Give a paragraph half-spacing: Ctrl + 5

To apply built-in styles quickly, try these:

  • Heading 1: Ctrl + Alt + 1
  • Heading 2: Ctrl + Alt + 2
  • Heading 3: Ctrl + Alt + 3

Since all these shortcuts are for paragraph formatting, you don't even need to select the paragraph (unless you want to format more than one paragraph at a time). Just click in any paragraph, and these shortcuts will work.
