Flemington, NJ (October 14, 2002) With Microsoft’s release of Office XP comes a fresh batch of easy-to-use Nerdy Books that will help you get the most out of your software. The publisher of the acclaimed Just the tips, man series announces its e-books for Word 2002, Excel 2002 and PowerPoint 2002. As with the previous versions, these e-books retail for $9.95 each and are available for immediate download or on CD-ROM at www.nerdybooks.com.
Nerdy Books retains its unique method with its Office XP titles: one major tip per page, presented by a member of the Nerdy Books gang: six cartoon characters, who explain (or add to) each tip in their own voices. Rather than a dull rating scale, you know what level of tip it is by which of the six characters is on the page. Mr. Nester, the impatient guy, appears on tips where the software doesn’t work the way you expect. Shagg, the hippy surfer dude in bare feet, appears on tips that are self-explanatory. Shelli, the tomboy based on co-author Wendy Richardson, shows you “tips that aren’t necessarily necessary.” And don’t forget Guy Martini wearing shades and snapping his fingers, he shows you the coolest tips.
Richardson notes what’s different about this release. “Our last set of books started off in black-and-white print, and we made color e-books out of them later. Since the e-books were so successful and faster to produce, we decided to lead off with electronic versions when writing Nerdy Books for Office XP.”
Leading with e-books also helps with distribution, according to Don Stein, sales manager for Nerdy Books. “I don’t have to worry about printing and delivery schedules or whether I need a truck with a lift-gate to deliver a palette of book cartons. When a customer wants e-books, they get them right away.”
Nerdy Books is also venturing into a new sales channel with its e-books: licensing the electronic content to corporations, education and government for their intranets. Rather than purchase individual printed books or e-books for each employee, an organization can buy a license to make a Nerdy Books title available for downloading by its employees.
Stein says that licensing can save a company thousands of dollars. “When selling individual units, we can bring the price down only to a certain point. But when a company buys a license, we have more flexibility when estimating how many employees will actually download the e-book. For a large company, that can be a significant savings.”
